A New Addition

A New Addition

Jojo holding his geckoRelax. We have a 10 month old, so no new baby. Although that would be  very impressive. Instead we have a 6 week old Gecko named Devil.

We promised Jojo a pet lizard for his birthday last January… but with all the busy goings on with the new baby and Raviv’s diagnosis, we didn’t have a chance to go lizard shopping.

Eventually we found him one from Zoo Harakim – זוחרקים (see previous post about scorpions for more info on this cool place…) and off we went to collect him.

He’s very sweet, which is lucky because it helps us justify his revolting diet. Any idea what a Leopard Gecko eats? No? I’ll tell u anyhow.

Cockroaches. Live Cockroaches. And the occasional grasshopper.

So my lovely, long awaited clean organised practically Pinterest worthy laundry room is now home to a large family of cockroaches happily breeding on the third shelf down next to the cleaning cloths. Hooray.

He gets 5 a day. Alternate days coated in Calcium. Think Live bugs in icing sugar.

Lucky for Jojo I’m not scared of bugs, although even I’m not wild about these things. And apparently he’s a chip off the old block. In fact he recently informed me he has been summoned in school, on more than one occasion, to remove spiders.

This made me laugh. I went to a semi haredi girls school in London where everybody was terrified of spiders. I never understood it. I was the school Spider Catcher, and oftentimes i would be sitting at my desk bored to tears in a lesson when in walked some girl in a flap saying “there’s a Spider in room 3b, we need Deganit!” And I would trot off to the room to find 30 girls (and a teacher) standing on their chairs screaming and waving their arms around. I would carefully remove the tiny thing, and breeze out, to the sound of hearty applause, as if i had just saved them all from some crazed attacker.

So far everything is going fine. Devil the gecko is happily consuming his cockroaches and growing nicely. All 12 grams of him. There was a slight technical hitch last Thursday when Jojo dropped one of his cockroaches and there was a power cut at that precise moment. Oh god sitting in the dark listening to… the scuttling. Cue screaming “it’s running around my laundry room” but we did manage to find him.

Its nuts. But not as nuts as Madonna turning 60. I’m still recovering from that one.
