A Magical Outing

A Magical Outing

4 October 2015

In keeping with our tradition of tiyulim-on-a-Friday, we decided to make a return trip to Ein Hod, which is an artists village next to the Carmel Mountain. We remembered going a few years back, enjoying the atmosphere. Husband found out about the Nisco Museums http://ein-hod.info/nisco/ and we decided to start our trip there. Rain was …

Party in the Pub (and a mild water crisis)

The Eshchar Pub opened a year ago, and is one of the best creations of our off-the-beaten-track, pluralist, anything goes, slightly tree-hugging yeshuv. It’s basically an outdoor pub hangout, smack bang in the middle of the Pinat Chai (kiddy animal corner), with a tiny bar (shack) and a load of benches made from old wooden …

Shavuot. Still the Festival of Moo?

Shavuot. Still the Festival of Moo?

I’ve never especially liked cheesecake. It’s nice enough but I don’t really get the whole obsessive thing. Maybe it’s coz I’m half Yemenite and this stuff just isn’t fully in my blood, I don’t know. Since I got married I have been making a very simple, not too sweet, traditional one for husband (no frills, …

30 days

After the shock of losing an old friend has subsided somewhat, I feel a little more ready to share… So many people have been writing about him on Facebook, but I think it’s actually taken me this long to let the news sink in. I mentioned in my last blog that an old friend passed …

Pesach in the North. Don’t pass over it.

Pesach in the North. Don’t pass over it.

This blog is dedicated to an old friend, Jez (Yehudah) Freedman, who passed away suddenly yesterday afternoon, whilst out buying medicine for his baby daughter.  (See note below) Israel goes nuts over pesach. Suddenly, completely irreligious, seemingly normal people start agonising over random housework which bears little or no relation to true pesach cleaning. Clearing gardens, …

If she really wants to know what to tell her kids….

If she really wants to know what to tell her kids….

24 July 2014

…I’ll tell her. I recently hear a Radio 4 broadcast featuring 2 women living through the current war. One living in a kibbutz near the Gaza border. One in Gaza. Both are mothers with small children. The interviewers did, what they honestly thought was their best, to present a balanced view. The Israeli woman sounded …

Living with Fear. How does it affect people?

Living with Fear. How does it affect people?

I often wondered, living in the UK, how Israelis manage on a day to day basis with the constant threats to their safety. (and I am not just talking about the roads here, readers). With rockets raining down on around 50% of the population, everybody is affected in some way. As an Israeli citizen sitting …

A trip to the Safari Park. Do the animals want to go to Gan?

A trip to the Safari Park. Do the animals want to go to Gan?

2 June 2014

After watching several episodes of Animal Park, we decided our children were finally at the Safari Park Appreciation Age. My 5 year old loves animals, especially birds and bugs and anything that vaguely resembles a dinosaur, and my 3 year old loves Giraffes. For years we had been wondering how on earth Israelis afford such …

Navigating the Israeli Education System. The fun starts now!

Navigating the Israeli Education System. The fun starts now!

1 May 2014

From my observations, anglo-olim appear to fall into roughly 2 categories. Those mega-zionists that try to embrace Israeli culture – pop their kids into daycare early, volunteer for this and that, take advantage of all opportunities to integrate, and may even avoid speaking English in the home. Then there are those who prefer to remain …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
