Post pesach fug has cleared…

24 April 2014

Pre-pesach, the country seems to go through a moodiness phase. I am not kidding. I saw friends of mine, usually happy, chirpy people wandering around looking seriously miserable before the chag, and I wandered what on earth was wrong with them. They just seemed so down! The minute the chag is over, kids are back …

But I don’t want to go to Gan….

1 April 2014

I am sure I am not the first mummy in the world to hear that line. But for some reason, I was told this is a bad thing. Having spent some months trying to justify my children’s attitude, I am starting to wonder why I am bothering. Is it so bad that they are not …

Purim on the Hill

Purim on the Hill

I don’t even remember what I used to do on Purim in London. It all seems so long ago. I think I went to a largely unmemorable megillah reading. The odd rubbish party. I remember having fun shpieling (aka door-to-door chugging) as a teenager in Golders Green. One especially memorable year we dressed up as …

Selling Chinese Takeaway on a Remote Hilltop

Well we had to try it. Sitting in a Chinese restaurant on a visit to Tel Aviv, enjoying all the old favourites… hot and sour soup, Szechuan beef and sesame rice balls… Husband suggested we open our own mini take-out in our yishuv. After all, we eat Asian food half the week in any case, …

Wedding in the Arava (on Friday night)

Wedding in the Arava (on Friday night)

It was a dark and breezy night. You could see every star in the sky. The bride wore a slinky dress and flip-flops. The groom looked calm and unruffled. This was a wedding the likes of which I had never seen before. Perhaps I just don’t go to the right sort of weddings. An Israeli …

We Cut The Hair. Musings on the Ethical Dilemmas of Making Choices for our Kids.

Well we finally did it. After about 2 years of “when are you going to cut his hair” we decided that the time was right. Our little boy was just getting too pretty. And frankly we couldn’t stand the stress in the shower. After all, the whole advantage with boys is no tears with hair-brushing, …

Sleep is a Public Health Issue. Time to wake up the Israeli Government.

Sleep is a Public Health Issue. Time to wake up the Israeli Government.

A recent BBC News article (‘Afternoon naps’ aid children’s learning) highlights the importance of children (as well as toddlers) having an afternoon nap. This was an american study, and perhaps this was why the results were focused on the childrens memory recall and task performance. I would be more interested in this regard to the …

10 Reasons Why I am Not On Facebook

10 Reasons Why I am Not On Facebook

A new wave of excitement has come over this blog, as it now has a Facebook page. All thanks to Husband, I must add. I am a self-confessed Luddite. I have had scores of “welcome” to Facebook messages. I actually still receive Facebook invites via email (do people seriously think that I haven’t heard of …

On Camping with small children….

20 September 2013

you def need stamina, thats for sure. If you don’t have that, then don’t try this at home folks. Since we are officially poor, and poor people have to go on free holidays, we decided to go camping. The galil is packed with gorgeous camping spots and our neighbours have all the gear so why …

On the role of Grandparents

On the role of Grandparents

If you ask somebody of about my age, married, with little kiddies, what is holding them back from Aliyah, one of the reasons they will most likely give is the lack of family. What they really mean is, the lack of hands-on HELP from grandparents! Raising small children without support from the older generation is …

My Story

This is the story of one family’s aliyah in 2010 to the North of Israel from just North of London, beginning 26th July 2010. At the time we were a family of 3, our delightful toddling little boy was 18 months and we were expecting a new baby just 7.5 weeks later.

In 2017 we are now a family of 7, after 4 boys we were blessed with a daughter. We invite you to join the trials, tribulations and (possibly) triumphs of emigrating to the holiest, and craziest country in the world, Israel.

Sadly, in 2020, just before the pandemic hit, the family became a family of 6 when the author, Deganit, passed away, suddenly and unexpectedly, age 40.
